River-related Non-profit Stewardship: How do groups stay relevant and healthy when competing for the same resources?

4-11 RMR

River Management Roundtable
April 11 | 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. ET

In addition to government agencies, academics, commercial operators, and businesses, there are a number of RMS members who work in nonprofit river-serving organizations. Board growth, shifting funder priorities, engagement of constituents, few or no staff are all common issues faced by nonprofit leaders. The purpose of this River Management Roundtable is to convene river professionals in the nonprofit sector to discuss the unique needs and challenges of running nonprofit organizations in today's world. The hope is to convene nonprofit representatives to have a moderated dialogue with interested audience members regarding common issues facing nonprofits and potential solutions to create more sustainable organizations.

Panelist

Kristina Rylands Kristina Rylands is a lifetime RMS member and is the president of the Pacific Chapter. As a kid growing up in Southern California, she daydreamed that a river ran through her backyard and knew it was all over as a 10-year-old when she first set foot in the Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park. She has lived in the Yosemite region for nearly 30 years, spending 13 years as an NPS wild and scenic river planner on both the Merced River Plan (including multiple rounds of litigation) and Tuolumne River Plan (0 litigation!). In addition, she served as an NPS representative on the Interagency Wild & Scenic Rivers Coordinating Council. Eleven years ago she left the NPS (and most river work) to follow her passion for inspiring the next generation of stewards as the Yosemite Regional Director for NatureBridge, a nonprofit education partner of the NPS. Today she works as a freelance project manager (and is the board vice chair) in support of the Upper Merced River Watershed Council just outside of Yosemite National Park. You'll find her spending as much time as she can on a river, especially in her beloved IK named Bunny.

About RMS River Management Roundtables

Each month, the River Management Society hosts virtual conversations with professional river, greenway, and water trails leaders, planners, and managers whose community, region, state and federal river will benefit from the experiences of peer-to-peer sharing. Our goal is to facilitate an open forum to support your work managing rivers. We work together to tackle common issues by asking questions, sharing solutions and building comradery.
