Owens River

Join us for a weekend on one of the West's most unusual and least-known rivers. We're bringing together river managers, outfitters, agency staff, and academics with an interest in water to introduce them to the Owens River--a river shaped as much by politics as by geology, and one that doesn't look or act like anything else in California.

Days will be spent on the gentle water, paddling by canoe and kayak through the river's sinuous channels under willows and cottonwoods that should be near or at peak fall color. Evenings shift to presentations and conversation back at the station, covering the Owens River Water Trail, the Lower Owens River Project, the Long-Term Water Agreement, and the current state and management of the fishery. Plenty of time built in for informal talk with people who work on these issues from very different angles.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own boats; a limited number of loaners may be available. Expect dormitory-style accommodations. Tent camping on-site is also an option, though the cost is the same.

When: Friday, October 23, 2026, 12:00 PM through Sunday, October 25, 2026, 12:00 PM.

Where: White Mountain Research Station, Bishop, CA. (3000 East Line Street, Bishop, California 93514)
