SE Chapter James River Weekend

Sep. 27-29, 2024  |  Richmond, Virginia

Join southeastern river professionals, students and chapter officers for an exciting educational weekend exploring the James River in Richmond, Virginia. Attendees will meet local experts and learn about the river's history, wildlife, ecology, and recreational opportunities on a rafting trip and pontoon boat tour. After rafting Saturday, we'll spend the evening at the free Richmond Folk Festival. Boats, accommodations and most meals are included with registration. Richmond was recently named #1 Best Town to Visit in 2024 by CNN!

Registration

Space is limited to 22 attendees, and the deadline to register is Sep. 13, 2024.

The trip is open to RMS members and non-members. If you’re not already a member, we encourage you to learn about the benefits of membership and join online.

Weekend registration is $200 per person for members or $250 for non-members. Members must be logged in to receive automatically discounted member pricing.

Cancelation Policy

If you cancel on or before September 6, 2024, we'll need to charge a $35 cancellation fee. If you cancel between Sep. 7 and Sep. 19, 2024, the charge will go up to 50% of what you paid. We will not be able to issue refunds after September 20, 2024, unless the program is canceled by the RMS SE Chapter.

Itinerary

Friday, September 27
  • Afternoon/evening: Arrive late afternoon/early evening. Tour and group dinner at VCU Rice Rivers Center in the "lodge." Rice is 25 mins from the airport, and shuttle can be arranged to pick you up, just let us know in the registration form.
Saturday, September 28
  • Morning - meet with James River City Park System superintendent and student and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) faculty and students to discuss river recreation in RVA and the brand new permit system
  • Early afternoon - Raft the Fall Line Rapids of downtown RVA with the VCU Outdoor Adventure Program
  • Early evening - Change clothes and stay in town after rafting. Go to the free Richmond folk festival with a return bus at 9:30 p.m. Dinner on your own at festival. Return to Rice by 10:30. Here is the list of this year's performers.
Sunday, September 29
  • Morning - Wildlife and history tour on the wide coastal estuarine section of the James River aboard the James River Association "Spirit of the James" pontoon boat. Learn about the JRA mission and VCU sturgeon research with possible eagle and sturgeon sightings.
