The River Management Society is looking for two contract employees. Our past Program Director and current RMS Journal Editor, Caroline Kurz, has moved on to a full-time position. The void she leaves is so great that we need to divide it in two!

RMS Journal Editor

Your role as editor is to maintain and enhance, wherever possible, the RMS Journal's profile and reputation. You have final responsibility for the journal's content. You should ensure that the journal's aims, scope and content support RMS’ mission to support professionals who study, protect and manage North America’s Rivers. As our RMS Journal Editor, you will be responsible for coordinating people, keeping track of details, and managing the flow of content. Forming a narrative around the quarterly, chapter-based themes will be helpful. As our Editor, you will collect articles, proofread them and ask for clarification from authors. You will also need to makes sure photos submitted are of sufficient quality for printing purposes and are accompanied by captions and credits.

Responsibilities include:
  • Working with RMS Staff to establish timetables, content leads for each issue (RMS Chapter Presidents or a surrogate for chapters whose officer positions are currently vacant)
  • Communicating with content donors who will include RMS members and guest authors
  • Checking photos, tables, and other graphics or exhibits submitted for sufficient quality, captions and credits.
  • Updating permanent ‘articles’ or lists with new members, and occasional updates for officers – this information will be provided by the RMS staff.
  • Estimating the page count range for the RMS Graphic Designer.
  • Delivering to RMS Graphic Designer via the internal system referenced above.
  • Proofread for context and technical accuracy (with RMS assistance as needed)
  • Coordinating a file conversion* with the Graphic Designer before graphic file is delivered to the printer.
  • Completing the above steps according to an agreed-upon, quarterly timetable that accommodates occasional needs for flexibility for this volunteer-authored publication.

The final press proof, hand delivered to / from printer in Missoula, Montana, will be reviewed by RMS (Caroline Kurz).

*To develop two ‘final’ files: a full color online version and hyperlinks, and a print version with color on the front and back covers only (black and white interior photos) and without hyperlinks.

Skills Required

We will look for the following strengths in our RMS Journal Editor:

  • Creativity. You will be an awesome Editor if you are creative, curious, and knowledgeable in a broad range of topics, particularly those which involve river management, stewardship and study.

  • Facility with MSWord, Google documents, pdf exportation.
Compensation

We expect to develop an annually renewable contract for four issues per year. Compensation will range from $40-600 per issue, depending on experience.

RMS Journal Graphic Designer

RMS is seeking a Graphic Designer to produce the quarterly 28-to-42-page RMS Journal. Your role as our designer and teammate is to maintain and enhance, wherever possible, the RMS Journal's profile and reputation. Working closely with the RMS Journal Editor and reporting to the RMS Executive Director, you as the RMS Journal Graphic Designer will be responsible for the following:

  • Agreeing on a system with RMS Staff and the RMS Journal Editor that facilitates access to content for each issue, including graphics and photos, coordinated with the RMS Journal Editor and RMS Staff (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox, Box)
  • Assessing content provided by the RMS Journal Editor to determine the likely length of the issue. Suggest or request additional content to fill out a signature, or alternatively suggest the omission or trimming of content to reduce the page count.
  • Providing a full-color PDF for RMS website in draft form for review and final proofing before sending to the printer.
  • Providing a file for print for which the outside cover pages (front and back) remain full-color and inside pages, including photos, are converted to greyscale.
Skills Required

As the RMS Journal Graphic Designer, you should rely on your familiarity with line, shape, color, texture, type, space and image as you bring our quarterly publication to life! These are the main category of specific skills we’ll expect and on which we’ll rely:

  • Technical skills: Proficiency in design software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, as well as knowledge of color theory and the seven basic elements of graphic design: line, shape, color, texture, type, space, and image
  • Soft skills: Strong communication and collaboration skills, the ability to give and receive feedback, research skills, problem-solving, creativity, and attention to detail
  • Other skills: Typography, including understanding fonts and how to use them effectively, and photo editing, including the ability to edit and manipulate images
Compensation

We expect to develop an annually renewable contract for four issues per year. Compensation will range from $1,000-2,000, depending on experience.
